BugScan provides Macintosh users with a safe, simple and effective way to scan for all strains of the AutoStart 9805 Worm, all files associated with the SevenDust Virus, some of the more recent Trojan Horses circulating in the Mac world as well as some of the most recent PC-specific worms and viruses. BugScan detects any combination of these files. Refer to the next section entitled 'What BugScan Looks For' to read more about the viruses themselves and exactly which ones BugScan covers.
BugScan is not meant as a replacement for commercial anti-virus applications. So, why use it? Because too many people don't use any virus protection at all. And even if they do, too many users don't bother to update their virus definitions until it's too late. We work on Macs every day and to give you an example, a 6200 we had in our shop yesterday was running Virex 5.5 with definitions that were over two years out of date. The user thought he was 'protected'. As a result of this, BugScan was created and made easily accessible so that our customers could use it to quickly determine if they have the AutoStart and Graphics Accelerator files on their hard drives (the majority of our customers belong to the graphics and desktop publishing communities which the AutoStart 9805 Worm hit the hardest). The original version of BugScan was released at a time when Virex was being re-designed so many of our customers who use Virex had no virus protection at all during this three-month period. These users didn't want to have to purchase a second commercial anti-virus product and we couldn't blame them for not wanting to do so.
Make sure you use Virex or Symantec Norton Anti Virus if BugScan locates 'Suspect' files on your Macintosh. You can tell BugScan to 'isolate' these files (allowing you to manually delete them) but there may be more damage that BugScan won't detect past the initial files it looks for (ie: some of the files on your Macintosh may be severely infected by viruses BugScan does not cover). BugScan is a file scanner so if you don't own a commercial anti-virus product yet, buy one as soon as you can.
Why is there no 68K version? The AutoStart Worm affects PowerPC's only which is what BugScan was originally intended to look for and remove. BugScan requires the Appearance Manager which is why the application needs Mac OS 8 or later in order to run properly.
We strongly recommend that you restart your Mac with extensions off (holding down the 'shift' key on your keyboard) before running BugScan. You can restart your Mac from directly within BugScan if needed by choosing the 'Restart' menu item. The 'Full Scan' method is the recommended method for scanning your Macintosh using BugScan.
BugScan will not harm your Macintosh nor any of the files stored on your Macintosh. This application does not install any system files other than a small preferences file used for storing system settings so there will be no conflicts caused by using BugScan.
